General Information

Kanyakumari town of Tamil Nadu is situated at the southernmost end of India in Tamil Nadu state. The town is equally popular among the tourists and pilgrims as it has several attractions for them. Waters of three seas viz. the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean confluence at Kanyakumari, providing a mesmerizing view to the visitors. Kanyakumari is among the very few places in the world where you can view both sunrise and sunset at the same beach. Legend had it that the goddess Kanya Devi was to marry the Lord Shiva who failed to turn up for the wedding. The rice and other stuff that was collected for the wedding feast remained uncooked and gradually turned into stones. Devout still believe that the stones at the shores are actually rice grains. Kanya Devi remained virgin lifelong and is worshipped here as a virgin goddess or Kanya Kumari.

Names of prominent personalities like Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi are associated with Kanyakumari whose memorials you can see here. Kanyakumari marks the termination of Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats ranges of mountains and receives an average annual rainfall of around 734 mm.

Tourist attractions in Kanyakumari

Vivekananda Rock : The rock is situated about 100 km from the mainland and can be approached by a ferry. There is a huge statue of Swami Vivekananda here. There is a stone structure known as Holy Foot, which is believed to be the footprint of goddess Kanyakumari. You can admire the golden hues of the horizon from Vivekananda Rock, which will leave you amazed and enchanted.

Thiruvalluvar Statue : There is a 133 ft high statue of Tamil Poet Thiruvalluvar here which corresponds to the 133 chapters of his epic Thirukkural. The view of the surroundings is simply awesome and inspires one to live a moral and principled life.

Kumari Amman Temple : The temple is dedicated to virgin Goddess Kumari Amman, who is believed to be an avatar of Parvati, consort of Lord Shiva. It is one of the highly revered temples of Kanyakumari.

Padmanabhapuram Palace : The beautiful palace is the royal residence of erstwhile Travancore rulers. It is made entirely of wood and is situated at an hour's drive from Kanyakumari.
