General Information

Rameshwaram city is situated on Pamban Island (also known as Rameshwaram Island) in Tamil Nadu state of India, in the Gulf of Mannar at the very tip of Indian peninsula. The city is just 50 km off Mannar Island of Sri Lanka. Pamban Island is connected to the mainland India by the beautiful Pamban Bridge. Rameshwaram is a highly revered Hindu pilgrimage destination and is one of the Dhams of the holy Char Dham pilgrimage destinations. Legends had it that it is the place where Lord Rama built a bridge across the sea to rescue his wife from Ravana, the king of Lanka. Fishing hamlet of Dhanushkodi is situated on the Rameshwaram Island which is the birthplace of the Ex-President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

The pilgrimage destination of Rameshwaram is spread over an area of 61. 8 sq km and resembles in shape to that of a conch. Rameshwaram Beach presents a beautiful view of the Arabian Sea and remains calm all the time with virtually no waves at all. It is good for sea swimming, boating and other water sports activities. Rameshwaram experiences a dry tropical climate. North East monsoon brings heavy showers to the island town from October to January each year. Average rainfall of Rameshwaram is 94 cm and the temperature here could vary from a maximum of 37°C in summers to a minimum of 17°C in winters.

Tourist attractions in Rameshwaram

Sri Ramananathaswamy Temple : The historic temple is situated near the Arabian Sea on the eastern side of Rameshwaram Island. The temple is famous for its largest corridor in the world which measures 197 m in length and 133 m in width. It has magnificent Prakaras or corridors with huge pillars on either side carved with beautiful sculptures. There is a 38.4 m tall Gopuram Temple Tower in the temple. The 12th century temple has 22 Theertha Kundams or the holy baths. Devotees are supposed to bath in all these 22 Theertha Kundams before having the darshan of the main deity Rama of the temple. Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple is the main draw for pilgrims and tourists to Rameshwaram.

Glass Boat Ride at Pamban Bridge : When in Rameshwaram, do enjoy glass boat ride at Pamban Bridge where water is shallow and you can view the coral life with much ease. To have a good view of the coral and marine life of the Pamban Bridge, go for a glass boat ride between 12.00 pm to 01.00 pm on a sunny day. Carry an umbrella to view the coral life under its shade as sunshine may spoil the best view of the underneath wonders of the waters of Pamban Bridge. You can reach Pamban Bridge by a bus from the Rameshwaram bus stand or hire a private taxi or cab.

The Five Faced Hanuman Temple : The temple is just 2 km from the main temple of Rameshwaram. There is a floating stone in the temple that is believed to be one of those used by Lord Rama to build a floating bridge across the sea to rescue his wife from the king of Lanka, Ravana.

Dhanushkodi : The fishing village is situated on the southern tip of Rameshwaram Island. The 18 km long and one km wide fishing hamlet was virtually wiped out during the devastating cyclone of 1964. You can enjoy viewing of the exotic bird life here. You can play into the sea here and also enjoy sunbathing and sea swimming. There is an arrowhead shaped Adi Sethu where devout perform religious ceremonies.

Getting There

By Air : Nearest airport is at Madurai which is 174 km from Rameshwaram Island.

By Train : Southern Railways connect the island with other cities in the region like Coimbatore, Chennai, Bangalore, Tirunelveli and Tiruchirapalli.

By Road : Point to Point bus service including the night service is available for the tourists. Taxis and private cab service is also available for the tourists. Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (ASRTC) runs a daily Tirupathi-Rameshwaram bus service for the island town.
