General Information

Udaipur city of Rajasthan is known with several sobriquets like "The City of Lakes", "Venice of the East" and "The City of Romance". Six beautiful lakes viz. Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, Udaisagar Lake, Swaroopsagar Lake, Rangsagar Lake and Dudh Talai Lake add to the beauty of the landscape of this serene city. Udaipur is situated 403 km southwest of the state capital of Jaipur. It was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II and was the first capital of Mewar kingdom.

Udaipur experiences tropical climate with maximum temperature touching to 42 °C in the summers and the minimum dripping to 2.5°C in winters. September to March is the best time to visit Jaipur as the weather remains comfortably cool and pleasant during this time of the year. Colorful festivals and fairs are held in Udaipur that is a reflection of the vibrancy of its desert dwellers.

Tourist attractions in Udaipur

Lake Pichola : The beautiful lake has two islands viz. Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir. The 4 km long and 3 km wide Lake Pichola was originally built by Maharana Udai Singh II. There are several bathing and washing ghats at Lake Pichola. It is a popular tourist and picnic destination of Udaipur. Boating facilities are available for the tourists.

City Palace : The beautiful palace is standing on the bank of Lake Pichola. Mor Chowk or the Peacock Courtyard is the main attraction of the City Palace Udaipur which is famous for its mosaics and decorated walls. Chini Chitrashala has a noteworthy collection of paintings. Sheesh Mahal, Dilkhush Mahal, Moti Mahal, Bhim Vilas and Krishna Vilas are other main attractions of the City Palace Udaipur.

Fateh Sagar Lake : The artificial lake was built by Maharana Jai Singh in the year 1678 and was expanded and modified further by Maharana Fateh Singh later on. It is a popular weekend hangout destination for the locals and tourists.

Jagdish Temple : The temple was built by Maharana Jagat Singh I in 1651 AD. It is situated in the middle of Udaipur and is known for its architecture and wall carvings.

Saheliyon ki Bari : The beautiful garden is set below the embankment of Fateh Sagar Lake. It has marble pavilions, lotus pools and cool fountains. The garden was originally built for the forty eight women attendants who accompanied a princess during her visit to Udaipur as dowry.

Getting There

By Air : Maharana Pratap Airport is 24 km off the city center from where flights run for Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and other cities in India.

By Train : Long distance trains run from Udaipur to New Delhi, Jaipur, Ajmer, Mumbai, Bandra and other cities in India. Mewar Express and Chetak Express run daily from Udaipur.

By Road : Udaipur lies on NH8 between Delhi and Mumbai and is well connected by bus service with other nearby cities like Jodhpur, Ajmer, Mount Abu, Bikaner, Ahmadabad, Delhi, Mumbai etc.
