Bandhavgarh National Park is situated in Umaria District of the traditional tiger country of Madhya Pradesh in central India. The national park is spread over an area of 448 sq km and is home to variety of animals, birds and plant species. It is a Project Tiger Reserve and boasts of the highest population of tigers anywhere in India. The hunting reserve of erstwhile Maharajas of Rewa, the sanctuary was declared a National Park in 1968. Its topography is dotted with Sal trees, grasslands and bamboo forests. The park is home to more than 42 species of mammals, 252 species of birds, 283 species of trees and 16 species of reptiles.


You can spot the following animals in Bandhavgarh National Park:

White Tiger, Royal Bengal Tiger, Asiatic Jackal, Nilgai, Indian Bison, elephants, tigers, leopards, beers, wild boars, Chinkara, Chausingha, deer, fox, jungle cats, spotted deer, Sambar, Langur, hyenas and Red Faced Monkeys.


The topography of the sanctuary is dotted with Sal forests and bamboo thickets which are interspersed with wild grass and meadows everywhere.


Bandhavgarh National Park experiences large variation in temperature in summer and winter seasons. The temperature in summer season could vary from 24 °C to 48 °C while in winter months of November to February; it fluctuates between 4 °C to 21 °C. The average rainfall recorded in the park is of 1200 mm. It is recommended that you take proper precautions before starting your exploration of the sanctuary. Mosquito repellant creams, snake boots and first aid boxes are recommended for trekking into the park.

Climber's Point offers a panoramic view of the national park. It is a good location to capture some nice pictures of the region. Baghel Museum has a stuffed white tiger on display and also the personal belongings of the Maharaja of Rewa. Badi Gufa is the biggest man made cave of tenth century which is one of the attractions of the sanctuary.

Celebrated writer Rudyard Kipling got inspiration for his famed creation "Jungle Book" (remember Mowgli and Baghera?) from the amazing varieties of flora, fauna and avifauna of Bandhavgarh National Park.

Like many other wildlife sanctuaries in India, Bandhavgarh National Park is closed for the visitors during the monsoon season of July to October due to incessant rains and thundershowers that make it difficult for anyone to view the wild animals. Best time to visit the sanctuary is from November to June when the weather remains comfortable both for the animals and the humans. Kanha National Park remains open from sunrise to sunset; however it is advised that you start your exploration of its wildlife early in the morning. This way, you will be able to see more varieties of birds and animals of the national park.

How to Reach Bandhavgarh National Park?

By Air : There is no airport in Bandhavgarh. Closest ones are at Jabalpur and Khajuraho which are situated 190 km and 210 km away respectively.

By Train : Bandhavgarh is well connected to Katni which is the nearest railway station to the national park. Daily trains also run for Bandhavgarh from Umaria railway station. Jeeps, buses and private taxis are available from the railway station for the sanctuary. You can reach to the park from Umaria within 30 minutes.

By Road : The sanctuary has good connectivity with Jabalpur and Katni.
