Ranthambore National Park is situated amidst the topography of bygone era in Sawai Madhopur District of Rajasthan. The park is spread over 400 sq km area and is a reserve for the elusive Indian Tiger. It is located at the junction of Vindhya and Aravali mountain ranges. The region was notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1957, was declared a Project Tiger Reserve in 1974 and accredited to the status of a National Park in 1981. Tiger sighting is almost guaranteed during your jungle safari of Ranthambore National Park. Tigers here have become so accustomed to the presence of tourists that they hunt for their prey in the full view of the curious human beings. The park is home to several other animals including elephants, bears, hyenas, deer, sambar, pythons and a variety of bird species. Waterfalls, lakes, rolling hills and serpentine rivers add charm to the diverse topography of the national park that beckons the wildlife lovers from the far and wide.

Flora and Fauna

Ranthambore National Park is home to more than 50 species of mammals, 272 species of birds, 12 species of reptilians and amphibians, 539 species of flowering plants and 50 species of aquatic plants.

Some of the animals that you can find in Ranthambore National Park are:

Tigers, elephants, Nilgai, chital, wild boar, Chinkara, black bucks, caracals, foxes, civets, mongoose, Toddy cat, jackals, macaques, leopards, hyenas, hedgehogs, rat snakes, Indian flying foxes, yellow bats, gazelles, monitor lizards, marsh crocodiles etc.

Besides the animals, the national park is rich with plant varieties as well. Its terrain is crisscrossed with evergreen belts of trees and bushes. Its landscape is dotted with Pipal, banyan and Dhok trees. The terrain of the sanctuary is made up of steep scarps, massive rock formations, jungle streams, perennial lakes and dense vegetation that suddenly open up into large expanses of Savannah grasslands. The national park has typical dry deciduous type of forest.


In summer months of April to June, the temperature may soar to 47 °C in Ranthambore. Winter months of November to February are the best time to visit the wildlife sanctuary as the temperature remains comfortable this time around.

Jungle Safari : Rajasthan Forest Department conducts guided tours for the tourists inside the national park. The safari lasts for 3 hours and is conducted twice a day, once in early morning and once in evening. There are four trails for jungle safari and only a limited number of vehicles are allowed on each trail during the wildlife safaris. The safaris offer a rare opportunity to capture some amazing photographs of the wild animals in action in Ranthambore National Park.

Ranthambore Fort is a popular tourist destination of Ranthambore. You can have a panoramic view of the sanctuary from its top. Surwal Lake which is just 25 km from Ranthambore is an ideal destination for bird watchers where one can view some exotic bird species.

How to Reach Ranthambore?

By Air : Jaipur Airport is the nearest airport to Ranthambore National Park which is 145 km away. You can hire taxis to reach to the sanctuary from the airport.

By Train : Ranthambore National Park is 11 km off Sawai Madhopur Railway Station. You can reach to the sanctuary in 15 minutes time by hiring a private taxi or auto.

By Road : Sawai Madhopur is the nearest town the wildlife sanctuary which is well connected with a network of government run and private buses with other destinations in Rajasthan and nearby cities.
